London is fun, a lot of fun. But 70 hour weeks, big company bureaucracy and a sense that you’re treading
water, can leave you wanting something more. Named for the town in England where Henry grew up,
Exeter Slate was born out of a need to to do something creative, a desire to work by hand and a love of small,
independent businesses. It follows in the footsteps of his grandmother, who painted fine china by hand for
Wedgewood and Royal Doulton. Above all, it’s a way to put a real, tangible product in people’s hands, which
we hope will make their lives just a little sweeter. Before leaving the UK, Henry travelled to North-West Wales to
learn to cut, shape and treat slate, along the Bethesda Nantile and Blaenau Ffestiniog quarry belts – the home of
the world’s slate industry. Henry and his American wife Meade moved to the US in 2013 to found the company.
They live in Meade’s home state of New Hampshire.
